Envisat was ESA's successor to ERS. Envisat was launched in 2002 with 10 instruments aboard and at eight tons is the largest civilian Earth observation mission.
More advanced imaging radar, radar altimeter and temperature-measuring radiometer instruments extend ERS data sets. This was supplemented by new instruments including a medium-resolution spectrometer sensitive to both land features and ocean colour. Envisat also carried two atmospheric sensors monitoring trace gases.
The Envisat mission ended on 08 April 2012, following the unexpected loss of contact with the satellite.

Европейское космическое агентство отказывается нести ответственность, если огромный 8-тонный неисправный спутник Envisat размером с автобус повредит какой-то действующий аппарат.
ЕКА говорит, что Envisat был разработан в конце 1980-х, когда космический мусор еще не считался серьезной проблемой и поэтому не учитывал требований ООН 2007 года по обращению с космическими аппаратами.
Обвинения в адрес Европейского космического агентства прозвучали в октябре на Астрономическом конгрессе в Милане. По мнению специалистов остатки топлива на спутнике позволяли поместить его на более безопасную для других объектов орбиту.
Вот такая штуковина будет 150 лет носится по густонаселенной орбите распугивая действующие аппараты.
